William Square site plan submitted

A site plan was submitted this month showing a 99-room hotel, 50-unit apartment building, fitness center and more at the former Free Lance-Star headquarters in downtown Fredericksburg.

The Vakos Companies is developing the project, which is called William Square. It is on a 2.1-acre parcel bordered by Amelia, Douglas and William streets as well as Washington Avenue. Demolition work on the former FLS building has been under way for months.

The William Square major site plan includes The Hotel Fredericksburg (66,763 square feet and 49-feet tall), Amelia House (a 72,435-square-foot, 50-foot-high building with 50 apartment units and a 6,137-square-foot fitness center), a vacant commercial pad site and related infrastructure.

In the adjacent block, Vakos is now building Winchester Place, which will be a mixed-use, four-story brick building of 43,224 square feet that will include 34 apartments and 3,199 square feet of commercial space at the corner of Amelia and Winchester streets. Vakos also built the new 321-space parking garage next to Winchester Place. Rounding out that block is Wack General Contractor’s Liberty Place project, which is now home to several commercial tenants with more expected in 2021 (including Atlantic Union Bank and Mellow Mushroom).

It is exciting to see these projects taking shape!
