Sunken Well Tavern has been a Fredericksburg favorite for many since it was opened by Paul Stoddard, Rob Ivy, and Steve Cameli in 2006. Its freshly cut steaks, 12 beers on tap, and Wednesday Trivia Nights have delighted guests for years. However, like many local restaurants and businesses, Sunken Well Tavern was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to adapt to the changing climate, current owners Stoddard and Cameli decided to allow for temporary outdoor dining in a section of their restaurant’s parking lot.

Sunken Well’s outdoor seating was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction, and prompted Stoddard and Cameli to accomplish a multi-year goal: building a patio. This Saturday, May 14th, Sunken Well Tavern will debut its outdoor patio seating. After gaining the community’s buy-in and working with general contractors, the patio was completed within two weeks. The patio increases the seating of Sunken Well Tavern significantly, and Cameli believes it will be a great addition during the spring and summer months.

The patio upgrades included new fencing, and extended concrete behind the building to add more space. The parking lot was also improved, and by next week, Stoddard and Cameli intend to bring a landscaping company in to plant a garden on the edge of the patio. The patio, complimented by giant, light blue umbrellas, brings a welcoming vibe to any guests of Sunken Well Tavern.

“Every seat is a dollar for us,” Cameli said, “so any opportunity to increase the amount of people we can serve is a chance to grow.”
