Shad spawning season in full swing on the Rappahannock

by | Apr 13, 2022 | Parks

Train BridgeGrab your fishing rods and bait, and prepare for the spring of shad. Just as the trees through town have begun to blossom, the shad of the Rappahannock River have begun to spawn.

Shad is a species of fish that is native to the East Coast, specifically to the Rappahannock. Their spawning season provides local residents with the perfect opportunity to catch some plentiful and beautiful fish. And there is no better place to fish for shad, or to watch others doing so, than right off the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

Prepare for an upstream travel for the shad, and make sure to try to catch them near the bank of the river. Fishing or fly rods are normally recommended, and prepare for some jumping; the shad have some fight in them.

There is no better time of the year to fish. And who knows, with any luck, your line will be hanging shad!
