‘Operation Tulip Drop’ coming to downtown FXBG

Tulip EventBloomia, a commercial flower grower in King George County, will be showing some major love to downtown Fredericksburg on Saturday.

Bloomia is donating 350,000 stems of tulips for distribution downtown to add some “flower power” and cheer up our community in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. With the help of Fredericksburg Virginia Main Street Inc. and the City of Fredericksburg, tulips will be distributed from area restaurants and shops that are doing carry-out business, and from two pickup locations downtown.

The drive-by pickup locations are in front of the Historic Renwick Courthouse in the 800 block of Princess Anne Street, and at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center (706 Caroline Street) parking lot, with the entrance on Charlotte Street. Those desiring tulips can simply drive up to these locations, roll down their car windows, and receive a large bunch to take home at no cost. The pickup stations will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prior to the Saturday distribution, tulips were delivered to area hospitals and nursing homes, as well as to first responders.

Werner Jansen, director of Bloomia, said: “During these unsettling times, we wanted to share our product with as many people in Fredericksburg as possible, to add stems of sunshine and beauty.”

“We are excited to be able to help facilitate the distribution of so many lovely flowers,” said Main Street Executive Director Ann Glave. “Our downtown needs uplifting right now, and the tulips are a positive sign of spring.”
