NPS cleaning up Lee Drive from microburst

August 16, 2021 | Fredericksburg City News |

The National Park Service (NPS) is cleaning up Lee Drive in the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park following a severe windstorm/microburst.

The storm came through the park July 14, damaging more than 200 trees on Lee Drive and related trails. Contractors for the NPS are scheduled to start removing damaged and downed trees today, and the work is expected to take about 45 days to complete. Certified arborist tree crews will be working daily weekdays from 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic should expect periodic partial lane closures during the work. The trails are currently closed on North Lee Drive and will also be cleared during this timeframe. The tree work will be simultaneous with the already planned North & South Lee Drive road construction (paving) project. Park users should avoid the area and consider other alternative routes during this time.
