New I-95 Southbound traffic pattern now open

by | Oct 13, 2021 | All Articles

A new traffic pattern is now in place on southbound Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area.

Before southbound drivers reach Exit 133 in Stafford County, they now need to decide their destination with traffic being split between local and through-travel lanes. Signs direct drivers as they navigate the new decision-point south of exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

To access Exit 133 (U.S. 17), the Virginia Welcome Center or Exit 130 (State Route 3), drivers now need to get in the right-two lanes. For Richmond or any point south of Fredericksburg, drivers need to get in the three left-most lanes.

Separated southbound local and through-traffic merges back together south of Exit 130 to continue on existing I-95.

The traffic shift coincided with the opening of the second Interstate 95 southbound bridge over the Rappahannock River. Six southbound travel lanes now cross the river, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the $132 million I-95 Southbound Rappahannock Crossing Project. Through-traffic uses the new bridge, while local traffic uses the older I-95 bridge.

Below is a great VDOT video that should help drivers visualize the new pattern. And click here for the full VDOT news release on this important topic.
