J. Brian’s building, business change hands

A longtime manager at J. Brian’s Tap Room in Downtown Fredericksburg is now the owner of the establishment, and he has a new landlord to boot.

Mike Mansfield this week purchased the restaurant and bar from Jack and Karen Hyland. Mansfield had worked at J. Brian’s for about 20 years as a bartender, night manager and more recently part-owner. He said he will make a tweak or two to the business but will mostly keep things the same.

The roughly 15,400-square-foot building at the corner of Caroline and Hanover streets that houses J. Brian’s, Sugar + Spruce and several upstairs apartments sold this week to an affiliate of Jarrell Properties for approximately $2.4 million. A few renovations are planned to some of the apartments, said James E. Jarrell IV, director of land acquisition and sales for Jarrell Properties.
