Fredericksburg tops in Virginia, second in U.S. for seniors
Fredericksburg, Va., is one of the very best places in the country for seniors to live, according to a recent survey by a website devoted to senior living.
Fredericksburg ranked second nationally (trailing only San Francisco) and first in Virginia on Caring.com’s rankings of the best U.S. cities for seniors. Here is the top 10:

- Washington, DC
- Lancaster (Pennsylvania)

- St. Paul
The survey rated 300 U.S. cities and all states. Other Virginia cities on the list included Alexandria (18th overall), Roanoke (71st), Richmond (127th) and Williamsburg (222nd).
Caring.com’s Senior Living Report graded cities and states across six different categories: senior housing, engagement, affordability, quality of life, healthcare and transportation. Fredericksburg ranked no. 1 nationally on the categories of healthcare and senior housing. The report highlights the quality of Mary Washington Hospital as well as Fredericksburg’s numerous engaging activities, day-trip opportunities and rich history.
As a member of a lifelong learning organization in Fredericksburg (Mary Washington ElderStudy) I can add further credence to quality of life in our town. Affiliated with the University of Mary Washington, over 350 seniors enjoy stimulating classes on a vast variety of topics! Even in times of the pandemic, classes have moved to online learning and members are staying connected via Zoom. This is just another offering available to seniors in our area!
