City offices to close Friday for Juneteenth
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced this week that Juneteenth will be honored in Virginia on Friday by, in part, declaring a holiday for executive branch employees. It is likely that the General Assembly will soon take up this matter and discuss Juneteenth as a permanent Virginia holiday moving forward.
Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery, and commemorates the day it was announced in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.
